College Tours with Kim: Scripps College

Kim will be traveling all over Southern California touring and learning about some of the best universities California has to offer. Follow her here for her insights into the various colleges -- what they're like and what it takes to get in!

Scripps College

WHY IS THIS SCHOOL AWESOME?

Kim: Scripps is a small liberal arts women's college within the Claremont Consortium, ranked number 3 among women's colleges in the US (US News and World Report). Most of Scripps look just like an east coast college on the west coast-- cascading ivy, classic collegiate architecture... But of course, there's that Southern California charm as well!

FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS?

Kim: This is such a hard question because I thought all of Scripps was just beautiful-- my favorite campus in the 5Cs! I have to say that the swimming pool just looked way too inviting. I think I'd want to spend all of my time lounging there. The architecture of the Denison Library is just gorgeous too, though!

5 WORDS TO DESCRIBE CAMPUS?

Kim: SAFE, LIBERAL, HISTORIC, CHARMING, BEST FOOD (seriously, most of the other colleges in the Claremont Consortium mentioned that Scripps has the best food).

THE "TYPICAL STUDENT" IS...

Kim: Female! Students here are very supportive, intelligent and intellectual.

INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE?

Kim: International students are warmly welcomed at Scripps, and the Claremont Consortium actually offers a variety of services, activities, and outings for international students every year. There are also many international and language majors to choose from.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS/OFFERINGS APPLICANTS SHOULD CONSIDER?

Kim: Interestingly, more than 21% of students choose to double or dual major by the time they graduate. Top majors at Scripps are art, biology, economics, English, French studies, math, politics, and psychology. About 83% of classes at Scripps have fewer than 20 students, so many classes are very individualized.

TIPS FOR THE APPLICATION PROCESS?

Kim: Scripps is competitive but attainable with hard work in high school. Average GPA of accepted students is 4.13, SAT is 2072 and ACT is 30. The college requires students to take the writing portion of the SAT and ACT and encourages students to take their time on this essay!

FUN FACTS?

Kim: Scripps is known to have the best dorms and food of any of the Claremont Colleges. One of my favorite things about the dorms is that some have balconies and orange trees below; I can't image what's better than waking up and picking a fresh orange off your balcony!

Orange trees below resident balconies!
